Serie A Team of the Year 2010-2011

Team of the Year is often seen as the award that recognised the outstanding performance of the players throughout the whole year. Almost every top football leagues in Europe had introduced this award as their end of the year recognition. The 2010-2011 Serie A season is the first season that the league introduced Team of the Year officially. So how does the Team of the Year in that season look like at that season?
GK- Samir Handanovic (Udinese)

Udinese is the surprise package in that season as they finished in fourth in the table at the end of the season, above teams like Lazio, AS Roma and Juventus. Samir Handanovic’s contribution was undoubtedly undeniable as he only conceded 40 goals in his 35 game played in that season, included 14 clean sheets in the process. Besides, he registered 1.1 clearances and 2.9 saves per 90 minutes in that season. This defensive contribution had helped Udinese only conceded 43 goals throughout the whole season, only one more than the runners-up Inter Milan. This is also the season that Handanovic broke into the scene as one of the best shot-stoppers in the league.
DF- Christian Maggio (Napoli)

A relatively unknown name for the current Napoli football fans, Christian Maggio was considered as one of the best Italian full-backs. Maggio was excelled in both offensive and defensive contributions. Offensively, he scored 4 goals and registered 5 assists in the league, included one against Juventus away from home. Defensively, he registered an impressive 3.2 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 2.3 clearances per 90 minutes in that season. With the all-rounded full-back in the team, Napoli had fired up to the third place in the league and regained their Champions League participation after 20 years.
DF- Thiago Silva (AC Milan)

Undoubtedly the leader in the league winning AC Milan defensive units that only conceded 24 goals throughout the whole season, Thiago Silva’s contribution was one of the key factors that enabled AC Milan to regain their first title since 2004. He was the colossus at the back of the AC Milan side as he registered 2 tackles, 2.7 interceptions and a staggering 7.6 clearances per 90 minutes. Besides, Thiago Silva’s 91.9% passing accuracy in the league is also very impressive as a centre-back. He is often considered as the best AC Milan defender since a certain Paolo Maldini retired.
DF- Alessandro Nesta (AC Milan)

Speaking about AC Milan defensive unit in that season, Alessandro Nesta’s contribution was also very vital to this title-winning side. His partnership with Thiago Silva was proved to be unbreakable as this pair only conceded 24 goals throughout the whole season. While Thiago Silva provides the solidity to the defence, Nesta provides further reliability in this already solid defence. He registered 1.6 tackles, 2.9 interceptions and 6.5 clearances per 90 minutes in that season. Even though he is a centre back, Nesta does not concede foul easily as he only registered 18 fouls throughout the whole season. He provides the reliability that almost every defensive unit needed.
DF- Andrea Ranocchia (Genoa/Inter Milan)

This is the breakout season for Andrea Ranocchia. He even gets himself a winter transfer to a bigger club to show how impressive his season progressed. Ranocchia started his season in a less dominant Genoa side. Even that, his 2.6 tackles, 1.9 interceptions and 7.6 clearances per 90 minutes had helped his team to a top-half finish halfway through the season. Ranocchia transferred to Inter Milan and continues his impressive form in his new club. His tackle and interception have improved even though he is currently playing in a more dominant club. Ranocchia is even rewarded his Italian national team debut in this season too.
DF- Pablo Armero (Udinese)

To get nominated into the team of the year in your debut season, the player has to achieve something unbelievable in order to do so. In fact, Pablo Armero is one of the reasons that Udinese surprisingly finishing fourth place at the end of the Serie A season. He registered 2 goals and 3 assists in the league as a full back. Armero’s passing ability is often seen as the reason behind this free-scoring Udinese side who is the second-best goalscoring team in the league. He achieved one key passes per game in the league seen as the attacking threat for this Udinese side. His did not neglect his defensive duties as he achieved 1.7 tackles, 1.8 interceptions and 1.6 clearance in that season. Armero is the most wanted full-back in Italy in that particular season.
MF- Marek Hamsik (Napoli)

The midfield general of the Naples based club, Marek Hamsik’s talent is undeniable as the key factor that Napoli finished in the Champions League spot. The Slovakian is undoubtedly one of the Napoli’s best players in the 2010-2011 season. His 11 goals and 6 assists contribution had announced himself as one of the best midfielders in the Serie A. Besides, Hamsik also registered 1.5 key passes per 90 minutes which provide a consistent goal threat to the frontline. He also contributed 0.9 tackles and 0.6 interceptions per 90 minutes in that season, which means he provided an extra shield in front of the backline. This is also the main reason that Napoli only conceded 39 goals throughout the whole season and be the second-best defensive side in the league just behind league winner AC Milan.
MF- Thiago Motta (Inter Milan)

Despite only played half of the season due to injuries, Thiago Motta still able to get included into the Team of the Year. His contributions towards the offensive side when he is fit are very impressive as he registered 1 key pass per 90 minutes with a stunning 90% pass accuracy. With his impressive stats, Thiago Motta had registered 4 goals and 3 assists in that season. As a central midfielder, he is not afraid to dribble past his opponent too. He had successfully dribble past his opponent 0.5 times per 90 minutes shows that he will try everything for his team to progress in the match. His defensive stats not bad either. Thiago Motta had registered 2.2 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 1.2 clearance as a central midfielder. He is an integral part of his team whenever he is on the pitch.
MF- Claudio Marchisio (Juventus)

This is the season that we see Claudio Marchisio as the real Italian talent that could carry the Italian football. He is the midfield general that can be the metronome of the team in both the club and the national side. Marchisio’s long ball accuracy is often been admired by most of the centre-midfielder. He registered 2.1 accurate long balls per 90 minutes in that season. His 1.3 key passes per game also ensured that Juventus had enough firepower in front of the opponent’s goal. Even though his potential is still yet to be discovered in this season, this performance is still a trailer that showcases what Italian football fans can be expecting from him in the upcoming years. And spoilers alert, he done it magnificently.
MF- Kevin Prince Boateng (AC Milan)

A versatile player that can play every position up front, Kevin Prince Boateng is the X-Factor that drives this AC Milan side to win Serie A title in 2010-2011 season. He is a constant threat for this title-winning AC Milan side as he contributes 1.5 shot and 1 key pass per 90 minutes. This statement can be solidified as he has been fouled 1.6 times per 90 minutes in that season. Despite playing in a more advanced role in that AC Milan team, Boateng also contributes 1.2 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 0.8 clearances per 90 minutes to add more solidity and strength into the team as well. The Ghanaian forward might not be lacklustre in terms of goalscoring number, his underlying stats is the one who proved that he is the vital one in the AC Milan attacking force.
FW- Edinson Cavani (Napoli)

26 goals and 5 assists, Edinson Cavani had contributed 52.5% of the entire goal scored by Napoli in that season. This is his first season and the Uruguayan striker had certainly handed in his performance in Naples with flying colours. His 26 goals contributions were not coming out of anywhere as he had 3.6 shot per 90 minutes in that season, in which most of them come inside the penalty area. Cavani was often been seen as the main threat by their opponents as he was been fouled almost once per 90 minutes in that season. This is the season that Cavani finally revealed as the prolific striker that is wanted by most of the top European club.
FW- Antonio Di Natale (Udinese)

The top scorer of the 2010-2011 Serie A season, Antonio Di Natale is certainly be included in this season’s Team of the Year. He contributes 28 goals and 7 assists for this Udinese team that fly high in the Serie A table. In percentage, Di Natale had contributed 53.8% of the entire goal scored by Udinese. This is an impressive record considering he was already 33 years old when he achieved this number. Di Natale is a penalty box killer as most of his shots and goals are inside the penalty box. He registered 4.2 shots per 90 minuted and 2.6 of them coming in the penalty box. Besides, Di Natale can also be the chance creator as he registered 2.1 key passes per 90 minutes too. For him, age is just a number.
FW- Zlatan Ibrahimovic (AC Milan)

I mean, he is Zlatan. How could he not include in the Team of the Year? His 14 goals and 11 assists contributions were definitely impressive especially after he spent one unfruitful year in Barcelona. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the catalyst that carries the whole AC Milan side to win the Serie A title. He was the club’s top scorer alongside Alexandre Pato and Robinho. At the same time, he was also the club’s top assist provider too. With 4 shots and 2.2 key passes per 90 minutes, it is easily seen Zlatan as the most clinical threat from this attacking-minded AC Milan side. And Zlatan does what Zlatan do best in the pitch, which is scoring. That’s the reason behind why this Team of the Year is not complete without the existence of Zlatan.
